With the PartyPoker World Open VI in full swing in London, video cameras were not just trained on the tables. As the single table heat format provides plenty of downtime for those waiting to play and those busting out early, there are ample opportunities to interview the competitors. On Monday, PartyPoker’s cameras caught up with Tom “ durrrr ” Dwan. Most of the first half of Tatjana Pasalic’s six minute interview focused on Dwan’s “durrrr Challenge.” Truthfully, nothing came out of it that most poker fans did not already know, with much of it simply being a recap of the challenge and the results to date.

by Celina Lin WCOOP 2010 is a date marked down in most poker players' schedule. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it is essentially the world series of online poker! The buy-ins range from $100-$10,000, so it will suit recreational players to those with a big bankroll. In the past we have seen many champions like 'Jovial Gent' arise from such series, and become overnight idols on the virtual felt. The WCOOP offers tournaments from 6 max, high rollers, shoot out to turbos, and guaranteed prize pool of $300,000 to $10 Million. WCOOP 2010 is a date marked down in most poker players’ schedule. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it is essentially the world series of online poker! The buy-ins range from $100-$10,000, so it will suit recreational players to those with a big bankroll.

In the past we have seen many champions like ‘Jovial Gent’ arise from such series, and become overnight idols on the virtual felt. The WCOOP offers tournaments from 6 max, high rollers, shoot out to turbos, and guaranteed prize pool of $300,000 to $10 Million.

Most poker players nowadays are pretty used to tournament structures, blind levels and antes. The strategy for multi-table tournaments differs depending on your opponents. If your table is limping a lot, you might want to adopt a more aggressive play and isolate pots where you can get it heads up. If players are relatively tight on your table, you might want to see cheap flops and try to set mine and bust players with over pairs.

When the blinds and antes get high, pick your spots to steal blinds constantly, keep putting pressure on short stacks and try a squeeze play if the situation is appropriate. A lucky few may find themselves in short-handed situations on the final table and maybe even heads up play. Most tournament players lack in short-handed and heads-up play because it doesn’t happen very often.

WCOOP 2010 will offer everyone a great chance to brush up on multi-table tournament skills, win big and play with Team PokerStars Pros from all over the world. I wish you all the best of luck and may the best win! See you all on the virtual felt.

Let’s pretend you’re a brand new poker player. Maybe you’re in Las Vegas for a buddy’s bachelor party, you’ve seen some poker on TV, and although you’re saving a little for the strip clubs, you’ve still got an extra $500 for “discretionary expenses” in your pocket. So, you sit down at the smallest game spread at the Venetian, fumble a big blind onto the felt, and play your very first hand of big-kid poker. In this scenario, what would you say might be the very worst thing that could possibly happen to you? You get stacked? You get cheated? You get into a drunken brawl with a guy nicknamed “Fancy Fists”? What if I told you the very worst thing that could possibly happen to you that night is that you win? And win big? It seems counterintuitive, but there’s a very good reason why it might be dangerous for a budding poker player to have a wildly successful first session: the Primacy Effect . The Primacy Effect is a cognitive bias – a psychological tendency for us to draw incorrect conclusions based on the ways our brains are wired rather than on the objective evidence.

After a long, hot summer at the WSOP, it is nice to come home and take it easy with my wife in the City of Angels. With the WCOOP around the corner, preparations are under way, and I am looking forward to a great tournament series.

For the past few weeks, my focus has been on getting ready for the games. The PokerStars WCOOP is a great series of tournaments to play in because it offers every different discipline. You’ll have the ability to play all variations of poker during the three weeks. If no limit is not your game, don’t stress, stud might be.

Over the past couple of days, I have been playing more mixed games to sharpen my skills and enhance my play. I will be playing in a bunch of events in the WCOOP. My strategy is to get as many mixed games under my belt before September 5th. PokerStars.com spreads an eight game mix and is a great place to go to get in some practice.

In addition to playing online I am updating my poker station to include two monitors and a new chair. Having a functional and comfortable station is really important for the WCOOP
because some of the tournaments will have extended blind structures and larger fields which could have you playing for up to 24 hours straight!

If you plan on winning, like I do, start banking some sleep hours, and try to prepare some healthy meals ahead of time. I use a meal delivery service in Los Angeles called NUTRIFIT to keep me playing strong. They offer a variety of pre-made healthy meals that are delivered right to your front door. While playing tournaments, you will want to avoid things like: caffeine, alcohol and refined sugars that will cause you to crash and burn.

Even if you are not able to find a meal service plan, it’s always a great idea to have some healthy foods on hand. Snacking is a great way to keep your energy level up. Another important thing to do is to include protein in all of your meals because it takes more time to digest and will keep you feeling full longer. Some of my favorites snack options are nuts and fruits, celery and peanut butter, hummus and veggies, and oatmeal with shaved
almonds and bananas.

Keep your brain sharp by staying hydrated and take full advantage of the five-minute breaks unless you have a laptop!

One last (but definitely not least) tip for all you players out there is to have patience, and enjoy the extended structure and increased game play.

Check out the official WCOOP site to plan your assault on the series. See you online!

In what seems to be an ongoing scandal that covers most of last year, a collusion ring based in China has been found on PokerStars , with the company providing little answers as to the depth of the alleged cheating or how their players were affected. In a highly detailed thread on the Two Plus Two forums, the conspiracy involving “Double or Nothing” (DoN) sit and gos is laid out, including insight into the reactions from the leading poker room in the industry. In these particular PokerStars tournaments, half of the players who enter win double whatever the buy-in may be, with the other half of the field earning nothing. The alleged cheating ring based in China apparently targeted the higher end DoN sit and gos, which ran in buy-in from $52 to $104. The 2+2 thread, started on July 1st by poster “frobush,” recaps the DoN collusion scandal into a easier to read version than the previous unruly thread that had developed.

It was a nervous night for 42 people on the Gold Coast last evening. Some would’ve slept better than others.
Welcome back to Jupiters Hotel and Casino for our continued coverage of the 2010 ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event. It’s going to be an exciting, and likely abbreviated, day as our goal is to first burst that pesky bubble and then form our final table of nine. Only 32 players are going to profit so the early stages of play today are sure to provide us with some interesting, and potentially heart-breaking moments.

While the short stacks will be anxiously watching each other like hawks, there are a few big stacks in the room that will no doubt be looking to press their advantage as the bubble approaches. Bubble play is a crucial period for tournament success, and our chip leaders will be doing everything they can to pressure those keen to sneak into the money.

Of course they come no bigger than the stack of Hong Kong’s Nick Wong, who lit up the Jupiters Poker Room late yesterday with a lucky river and a massive pot to claim the overnight chip lead with 376,500 in chips. Others in our top five include Nauv Kashyap, day one chip leader Darko Balaban, PokerStars sponsored Aaron Benton and young gun Liam O’Rourke.

PokerStars sponsored Aaron Benton is looking dangerous as one of our chip leaders entering Day 3

Join us as the cards will be in the air at 11:30am local time as the 2010 ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event continues.

Benton has had a stellar year after his breakthrough live victory at the season-ending APPT Grand Final in Sydney last December. Benton cashed at the ANZPT in Perth, before reaching the final table at the ANZPT Canberra for another $12,000. He then headed over to take on the world at the WSOP before returning to collect a win and a runner-up result in side events at the ANZPT in Queenstown.

His form also extends beyond the ANZPT after collecting a 3rd place finish in a pro-am event last weekend in Sydney worth another $55,000.

Benton will be one to watch early as his big stack and aggressive style will be relentless on the short stacks, as he eyes off another ANZPT final table berth.

Join us as the cards will be in the air at 11:30am local time as the 2010 ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event continues.

The good people of Estonia are a cheery bunch at the best of times, but tonight they had a smile wider than the Gulf of Finland, the expanse of sea that separates the capital city from their Finnish neighbors. The reason was an extraordinary international soccer match just a few miles away from our tournament hotel here in Tallinn. Losing 1-0 to the Faroe Islands after the 90 minutes were up, Estonia somehow managed to bang in two goals in injury time to snatch an unlikely victory. It was a quite breathtaking comeback, but one which, in poker terms, was repeated right before our eyes on the tournament floor. Ville Wahlbeck, playing his first EPT wearing the colors of Team PokerStars Pro, was down to less than 5,000 chips at dinner and looking like he was heading for the proverbial early bath.

But he then went on a run that took him up to 68,800. He, like the Estonian strikers tonight, had left it late to hit the back of the net.

Ville Wahlbeck

And while several others performed comebacks of their own – notably the Italian Alfonso Almendelo, who went from 10,000 to 78,000 – a lucky few took an early lead and simply kept scoring until the nine levels of play were over. Top of the league tonight is Ali Tekintamgac from Germany with 203,200. He played aggressively to dominate a table that included Allan Baekke, the EPT Snowfest champion. Baekke fell at the death, running K-9 into pocket queens.

Ali Tekintamgac

Allan Baekke

The only serious challenger to Tekintamgac was Matvey Linov from Russia. He bagged up 193,400, building a monster stack by raising, re-raising and value betting at a table that included the dangerous Brit Praz Bansi.

Then you have to go all the way down to 134,500 chips to find the next player, Artem Litvinov, and 134,300 for Mauro Palazzo.

Mauro Palazzo

Team PokerStars Pro had a good day. Luca Pagano (124,900), Arnaud Mattern (103,600), Ivan Demidov (80,100), Joep van den Bijgaart (61,900), Michael Keiner (58,800), and Alex Kravchenko (28,400) all made it through, joining the comeback kid Wahlbeck. Through, too, is Friend of PokerStars Pierre Neuville with 69,000.

Luca Pagano

Top-performer Pagano went about his business quietly and efficiently – a strategy that has seen him cash a record 14 times at EPT events.

But as ever, for every tale of chips won there is a story of chips lost. Among those who will not be coming back are new Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, playing in her first EPT event, who had soared to more than 80,000 earlier in the day, but was then felled by a succession of nasty hands.

First she ran her A-J into A-Q on on an ace-high flop, then top pair into a flopped set of fives that improved to quads on the river. Finally, she re-shoved with pocket tens, was up against Jyri Merivirta’s A-8 – and he spiked an ace. Selbst’s excellent pedigree, including taking the NAPT Mohegan Sun title in April, means she’ll be back again soon.

Vanessa Selbst

Gone, too, is Annette Obrestad, who’s remaining chips flew across the table in the last hand of the day. She had sat next to Jeff Sarwer throughout and was joined in the latter stages by Ivan Demidov to complete a tricky table.

Annette Obrestad

Of the 181 players who started the day, only 89 survived to fight another day. But first we have to get through Day 1B tomorrow, when a bumper field is expected, including the likes of Team PokerStars Pros ElkY, Dario Minieri and Katja Thater.
